The Elias String Quartet at the end of their performance in the Victorian Gallery.

Elias string Quartet, 17th october

The Elias String Quartet were warmly received by the New Walk Museum audience after a contrasting and superbly delivered programme.

They began with the Australian composer, Matthew Hindson’s second quartet, an evocation of the ‘Big Bang’, replete with striking and imaginative effects, but also some really lyrical passages of great beauty.

Turning to Schubert’s A minor Quartet D804, this was a performance which emphasised the relationship between each of the players in delivering an interpretation of great subtlety and control.

The Elias Quartet concluded their programme with a gorgeous arrangement by violinist, Donald Grant, of a traditional song from his hometown in the Highlands of Scotland.

We were thrilled when the Elias Quartet agreed to play at the gorgeous Victorian Gallery for the first time: they were conspicuously missing from the roster of leading groups who have visited us in recent years. It is true to say that their performance did not disappoint!
